Week 77 (7/22/2026 - 7/28/2026)

Hi everyone, welcome to my 77th blog! This is the Week 5 post for CST 438 Software Engineering.

  • Summarize in a few sentences what you have learned this week.
    • This week consisted of Iteration 2 of the large group project in this class, focusing on the React frontend, while Iteration 1 from last week focused on the REST Spring Boot backend.
    • This week also had readings in "Software Engineering at Google" regarding large testing. Below are some details worth taking away:
      • Large tests are different from unit tests in the fact that they are intended to be more comprehensive. As a result, they tend to have higher costs, which also results in longer runtimes.
      • A common example of a large test that I have commonly seen working as a software engineer is A/B testing, which is often used when experimenting with new changes (often frontend UI changes, since that is where the average users is most likely going to notice a difference). This is where you will divide your userbase into two buckets, typically with an even 50/50 split.
        • One bucket will be a control group where no changes are made, while the other bucket will use your software with the new changes in place. Over time, you can then gather the feedback of both groups to determine which version users found to be superior. (old vs new).
        • Traditionally, A/B testing compares a control group (the existing experience) against a treatment group (a modified experience), as described above. However, it is also possible to compare two experimental variants directly, with both variants optionally falling back to the baseline behavior if an error occurs or predefined conditions are met. In this case, the fallback mechanism is separate from the experiment itself.

That is all for this week, see you in my Week 78 post!
