Hi everyone, welcome to my 27th blog! This is the Week 3 post for CST 334 Operating Systems.
  • Write a 1-2 paragraph journal post, of at least 250 words, of what you learned this week in CST 334.
    • Week 2 and Week 3 had the same amount of chapters to cover. The lecture videos help recap these textbook readings, covering concepts such as address spaces, the C memory API, address translation, base-and-bounds, segmentation, and free space management. For the readings of this week, I read OSTEP Chapters 13, 14, 15, 16, and 17. Topics covered in these chapters reflect those discussed in the lectures but with more detail. Assignments tied to the lecture side of this week include watching the aforementioned lecture videos, Quiz 3, and the Week 3 Discussion. In relation to the group research project, my group Silicon Surfers decided to do the group project on the paper I chose, called Triangulating Python Performance Issues with SCALENE. Finally, there was an extra credit opportunity available by filling out the survey sent out by the CS Online advisor, Kayla.

    • On the lab/development side of this week, it was essentially applying the theories of memory virtualization. There were two assignments related to this: Virtual Memory Lab (Part 1) and Programming Assignment 3. Virtual Memory Lab (Part 1) gives a lot of practice on how to calculate memory management problems by hand. This activity develop a practical and calculative understanding of memory management concepts. Unlike Programming Assignment 2, I found this one to be less straightforward. It took me a while to realize that this project used a doubly linked list type data structure to organize the nodes. However, upon this realization, it made managing the nodes a bit easier.

That is all for this week, see you in my Week 28 post!
